MOTH MAINSAIL

MOTH MAINSAIL

CODE 2A
In a boat where the sailing weight is 30 kilos every gram saved in the sail is significant; we have focussed much attention on this aspect of the design. For the body of the sail we are using ODL 04, a 2.8oz Technora laminate, the lightest and most stable material available.

In 2007 we used a four batten layout in an effort to save weight but for 2008/09 have reverted to five to maximise sleeve rotation to ensure that the sail gybes easily and smoothly.
A successful Moth design strikes the difficult balance between power and control. The power is necessary to achieve early flight, but once foiling the apparent increases almost at once to a point at which the top of the sail has to flatten and twist. Mike feels that he has got the balance just right in his 2009 sail.

Changes to the 09 sail include, a return to a radial panel layout, revised leech profile to promote pointing ability and a slightly bigger top. The sail also sports the suspended cam system for fast rotation during manoeuvres as developed on last year’s sail.
